In anticipation for my forthcoming digital exposition “Paris I Suppose” at the Un Jour Une Illustration gallery in Paris from January 6th-February 24th 2024, I’m sharing a few tips on how to get the most out of a trip to this intimidating, stunningly complex and radiant city.
The khaki shorts, the socks hiked to the gods, puzzled eye contact, general clustering and moving in masses. Thanks for visiting Paris, tourists. We see you! Yes, we’d all love the superpower of fitting flawlessly into any destination, but no one can truly blend in on a hop on/hop off bus. Here are a few do’s and don’ts to prevent you from getting jumped for your Rick Steves money belt.
Don’t bucket list it. I understand the need to conquer a city to get your precious money’s worth. But don’t limit your time by just checking off boxes. Take the time to lead with curiosity.
French ppl. They aren’t rude. They are just busy big city dwellers who don’t have time to chat up strangers. Brush it off; it has nothing to do with you.
On speaking French. Kindergarten French does not equal fluency. Don’t expect to learn French in 72 hours.
Manners and politeness are king in France. In a notoriously secular country, they are almost of religious importance. Always say bonjour and au revoir when walking into a shop or restaurant. If you’re asking anyone for anything (directions, help), always start with a bonjour and an excusez-moi. Even if you don’t speak a lick of French, these small gestures will take you far or at least get you help when you need it.
Parisian style is more about fitting in than being the peacock in the corner…unless it’s fashion week which it always seems to be. Paris is not a runway, but do follow the codes of dress to not look like an American bonehead. Athleisure, oversized hiking gear and giant water bottles are a green light to pickpockets.
Getting around. Paris is dense and extremely walkable unlike many of its other metropole cousins. Find a few things you’d like to do in a neighborhood and connect the dots by strolling through the many meandering streets. Pick up a copy of my book Paris in Stride which is dedicated to just that.
Anti-tendance. Paris is so much more than just the textbook fondue, soufflé and duck à l’orange. Prescriptive travels leaves you with little potential for surprise. You may be better off going to a good local restaurant and ordering the plat du jour.
We’ll always have Paris. Don’t feel like you have to master or conquer everything. Paris will always be here, give or take a few poke bowl joints.
Fin.
Stay inspired, dear reader. And don’t drink the watercolor water. -jkw
