Dear reader,
I have a little special treat for you today. It was a sunny day in Paris and I impulsively filmed a simple watercolor exercise that can also be a last-minute v-day gift. Enjoy and upload your creations in the comment section below.
Learning objectives: Understand and overlap transparency in watercolor, mix color progressively from lightest to darkest, control water and paint in even layers.
Materials: watercolor paint, watercolor paper, round paintbrush, paper towels, hairdryer (optional)
Step 1: Choose 1 color from your palette. You will be adding water progressively to adjust the intensity. Activate your watercolor paint by swirling a wet paint brush on the surface. Mixing on a palette or a clean tabletop, add water until it is the lightest version of this color as possible. Once you have the right hue, paint a heart on the watercolor paper working quickly to paint an even layer. Let it dry completely, using a hairdryer if necessary.
Step 2: Load up more pigment on your paintbrush and add to the previous color on the palette to make a slightly darker hue. Test color by dabbing your paintbrush on a paper towel and adjust as necessary. Paint a slightly smaller heart within the first heart. Dry completely.
Step 3: Repeat the process until you have 6 overlapped hearts.
Step 4: Reflect. How did you do? Where you able to create a smooth transition between the lightest and darkest colors? Did you have too much water on the paper? If so, use a smaller brush.
